Driving

The road distances to Moreton Telegraph Station are considerable and appropriate trip planing is essential. Moreton is 750 kilometres (470 miles) from Cairns, 293 kilometres (185 miles) from Cape York, and 130 kilometres (80 miles) from the nearest town centre (Weipa). This remoteness imbues Moreton with a unique character and plays a large part in making your trip to 'The Tip' and home again a real achievement.

Road conditions on mostly gravel roads can vary markedly throughout the year, and we strongly advise you seek up-to-date information and ensure your vehicle is well maintained and equipped for the conditions.

Most visitors to Moreton are Australian domestic holiday-makers who either drive their own 4WD or join one of the several 4WD tour companies operating from Cairns and other centres further afield. However, as you can see from the photos, you don't need a flash new four-wheel-drive vehicle to get to Moreton.

Moreton Airstrip

The natural-surface airstrip is constantly maintained in good condition. You can join the weekly mail plane for a flying visit to Moreton and the other properties on the route - contact Skytrans.

You may wish to fly your own plane to Moreton for a longer visit. Airstrip designation is MOT, and the coordinates used by the Royal Flying Doctor Service are: 12º 27' 13.36" S 142º 38' 18.08" E.
